What Is Rainbow Girls, and How Is It Linked to Freemasonry / Eastern Star?

The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls (IORG) is a youth organization for girls (ages roughly 11–20) that was founded in 1922 by Rev. W. Mark Sexson, a Freemason, and with ties to the Order of the Eastern Star. jesustruthdeliverance.com+4nyiorg.org+4masonrytoday.com+4 It was originally for girls whose fathers were Masons, though over time it has opened membership to all who believe in a “Supreme Being” (no specific religion requirement) concordrainbow.files.wordpress.com+4gorainbow.org+4nhrainbow.org+4.

Rainbow calls itself a Masonic youth service organization that teaches leadership, confidence, character, service, and community work. concordrainbow.files.wordpress.com+3gorainbow.org+3nhrainbow.org+3 They hold meetings with a ritual (a “Ritual” book of ceremonies) and have symbolic elements (bows, colors, ceremonies) nhrainbow.org+2concordrainbow.files.wordpress.com+2.

Though Rainbow does not require Masonic affiliation of new members in many places nowadays, it still retains the structure, symbolism, and history tied to the Masonic family and Eastern Star circles. gorainbow.org+8nhrainbow.org+8nyiorg.org+8

So in summary: Rainbow Girls is a youth group with ceremonial ritual, symbolism, and historical Masonic roots, intended to build character and service skills in girls, under the oversight of “advisors” (often Masons, Eastern Star, etc.). txiorg.org+5Wikipedia+5nhrainbow.org+5

What Do They Do, and What Kinds of Oaths or Rituals Are Involved?

What They Do:

  • They hold assemblies (meetings) with official opening/closing ceremonies using the Ritual book. jesustruthdeliverance.com+3nhrainbow.org+3concordrainbow.files.wordpress.com+3

  • They plan service and charity projects: working with hospitals, assisting communities, fundraisers, visiting nursing homes, etc. Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation+2nhrainbow.org+2

  • They teach leadership skills, public speaking, organization, teamwork, character values like loyalty, service, hope, and “faith in a Supreme Being.” Wikipedia+5nhrainbow.org+5concordrainbow.files.wordpress.com+5

  • They use symbolic “bow stations” each representing virtues (Love, Religion, Nature, Immortality, Fidelity, Patriotism, Service) in a progression. masonrytoday.com+2concordrainbow.files.wordpress.com+2

  • They have rituals, pledges, oaths of secrecy or loyalty among members, binding them to certain promises. Former members have testified to “16 oaths, vows, obligations, and pledges” they took at the Rainbow altar. emfj.org

  • They often instruct members not to reveal secrets of their ritual to non-members. (Testimony: “vow to not tell our secrets that happen in Rainbow to the outside world”) Reddit+1

  • At meetings, there may be prayers or ritualistic elements (not necessarily explicitly Christian) as part of opening/closing ceremonies. Some former members claim the prayer was not a standard Bible prayer but more ritualistic. Reddit+2emfj.org+2

So yes — there are oaths, pledges, secret commitments, ritual obligations, and symbolic elements that resemble esoteric or ceremonial traditions.

Why Some Christians Believe Rainbow Girls (and Eastern Star connections) Are Against God / Spiritually Dangerous

From a biblical, deliverance, and spiritual warfare perspective, here are arguments critics often make:

  1. Rituals, oaths, and secret obligations are closely tied to occult, Freemasonry, and witchcraft in Scripture. The Bible warns against binding souls with vows to other spirits (for example, Ecclesiastes 5:4-5, Zechariah 5). When young people swear oaths that bind them spiritually (especially in secret), they may give ground to demonic influence.

  2. Hidden symbolism, allegorical teaching, and ritual mystery often have roots in occult or esoteric systems. Even if superficially benign, the structure and secret knowledge tradition is characteristic of occult groups.

    • Freemasonry as a whole has been criticized by many Christian voices for its secret rituals, oaths, symbolism, and blending of religious elements. Rainbow is part of the “Masonic family” in that sense.

    • Eastern Star is another Masonic appendant order with ritual and symbolic elements, sometimes described by Christians as mixing Christian names with esoteric elements. Wikipedia+1

  3. Belief in a “Supreme Being” without defining God is a religious ambiguity. Requiring belief in a Supreme Being (but not necessarily the Christian God) opens the door for syncretism or acceptance of false gods. Rainbow explicitly requires members to believe in a Supreme Being. txiorg.org+3nhrainbow.org+3concordrainbow.files.wordpress.com+3

  4. Alleged spiritual binding: Some former members claim that the oaths and rituals “desensitized, numbed, and bound me” spiritually. emfj.org This suggests spiritually binding knots or soul ties through ritual participation.

  5. Secret societies and hidden influence: Because Rainbow is affiliated with Freemasonry, some Christians believe it introduces children to secret society mentality, spiritual loyalty structures outside of Christ, and influence from Masonic ideology.

  6. Divination or symbolic power? While Rainbow does not officially present itself as occult or divinatory, critics argue that using allegory, symbolic mysteries, rituals, and secrecy is very similar to occult practices, and even if not openly divination, it becomes a spiritual training ground for hidden knowledge and initiation.

  7. Potential for spiritual deception: Whenever a group has secret rituals, oaths, symbolism, and promises of personal transformation through structured systems, there is potential for demonic deception behind the scenes. If participants are not grounded in Christ and know God’s Word, these rituals can become gateways for spiritual bondage.

From a Christian deliverance perspective, any ritual or oath made outside of Christ is suspect and may require spiritual breaking of those ties.

What to Watch Out For / How to Discern

  • Examine carefully any ritual that requires secrecy or binding vows.

  • Ask: Are members told to pledge loyalty in a way that is spiritual or mystical?

  • Are symbolic elements, ritual gestures, or “guides” taught under the guise of moral lessons?

  • Are participants discouraged from asking questions, or told “you cannot share this” with non-members?

  • Does the group require spiritual binding or ritual initiation that is not transparent or accountable to biblical authority?

  • Are there oaths or obligations that promise spiritual change or power through the ritual itself?

If any of these are present, a Christian should proceed with caution and test against Scripture.

Those who have participated in Rainbow Girls, Eastern Star, or any Masonic-connected youth group may need deliverance because involvement in secret oaths, pledges, and ritual ceremonies opens spiritual doors to deception and bondage. These vows are made outside of covenant with Jesus Christ, often invoking a “Supreme Being” that is not the God of the Bible. Such oaths create spiritual soul ties with Freemasonry’s occult roots—ties that can invite spirits of secrecy, control, confusion, and false light. Even if done in innocence, these ceremonies establish legal grounds for demonic influence, leading to spiritual oppression, fear, or resistance to the Holy Spirit. Through repentance, renunciation, and prayer in the name of Jesus, these unholy covenants can be broken, and the person’s soul can be released from every hidden tie to Masonic or occult power. Deliverance brings freedom, cleansing, and restoration of loyalty to Christ alone.

What Christians Should Do / Respond

  1. Prayerfully research and test everything by Scripture (1 Thessalonians 5:21).

  2. Ask questions: leaders, advisors—what do the rituals mean? What sources were used?

  3. Be cautious about allowing children into groups with secret oaths or ritual initiations unless every aspect is transparent and biblically defensible.

  4. If involvement already exists, consider spiritual covering: repent for participating in oaths or rituals contrary to Christ, renounce any spiritual ties, and ask God to break any bond.

  5. Teach children the supremacy of Jesus over any human-led organization, and guard their hearts with prayer and Scripture.
